Root Canal Bend, OR

There is a common misconception that root canals are one of the most painful dental procedures to exist. Some patients would rather have a tooth extracted than undergo a dental procedure such as a root canal. The truth is, however, that once the infection is removed from your tooth, which is actually the culprit for the pain you are experiencing, you will feel much better. And the best news is, you can save your tooth! At Cascadia Family Dental we perform root canals on our patients every day.

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a common dental procedure designed to save and restore teeth that are severely decayed or infected. When the soft tissue inside a tooth, known as the pulp, becomes inflamed or infected due to deep cavities, cracks, or trauma, a root canal treatment can help eliminate pain and prevent further damage. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the inner tooth, and sealing it to prevent reinfection. Root canals not only relieve discomfort but also help preserve your natural tooth, maintaining both function and appearance. Root canals allow your tooth to be saved.

Who Needs a Root Canal?

People with injured pulp are sensitive to temperature changes, especially when drinking hot or cold beverages. A root canal is required for people who experience discomfort or pain while chewing or biting. A root canal is also ideal for those who have discolored gums, inflamed gums, or pimples on their gums. Schedule a dental checkup with our office if you are experiencing acute toothaches. During your dental exam, we will diagnose any problems you may have and offer the best treatment option for you.

The Root Canal Process

When you come in for your root canal procedure, the dentist will first anesthetize the gums around the affected tooth to make sure that you do not feel any pain during the treatment. After numbing the tooth, the dentist will make a small cut on top of the affected tooth and will use a file to remove any damaged or wounded pulp. Once the pulp is eliminated, the dentist will apply antibiotics to the infected area to completely heal the infection and minimize the risk of reinfection. From there, we will sanitize and disinfect the canals. The tooth will be filled and sealed using a rubber-like substance called sealer paste. The dentist will then use a soft temporary substance to seal the tiny hole in the top of the tooth. This substance prevents saliva from damaging the canals.

After Your Root Canal

Ensure you visit our office several days after the root canal surgery. The dentist will do tests to ensure that the area surrounding the infected tooth is no longer infected. Do not bite or chew with the injured tooth until it has been filled fully.
